participate in organized sports?

Should my patient with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy participate in organized sports?

Not Recommended

All patients with possible or definite ARVC:

"Athletes with a definite diagnosis of ARVC..."
"Athletes with a borderline diagnosis of ARVC..."
"Athletes with a possible diagnosis of ARVC..."

"...should not participate in most competitive sports, with the possible exception of low-intensity class 1A sports."

Non-Class IA = Inadvisable

Class IA sports: Bowling, Cricket, Curling, Golf, Riflery, Yoga = Possibly Acceptable

(Class III Recommendation; Level of Evidence C)

Prophylactic ICD placement: "Prophylactic ICD placement in athlete-patients with ARVC for the sole or primary purpose of permitting participation in high-intensity sports competition is not recommended because of the possibility of device-related complications."

(Class III Recommendation; Level of Evidence C)
